Introduction to Kalgea

I did this picture almost two years ago, but it still holds up quite well in terms of what is considered to be “canon” in the Azure Wheel universe.

Kalgea (pronounced either Kal-Gay-Ah or Kel-Gee-Yah… I’ve been known to say it both ways) is a rainforest planet known for its exotic birds and mile high trees.  While nothing overly important in my storylines happens here, it is still probably one of my favorite planets in the Azure Wheel universe and I’ve probably put more work into developing it then any other planets, including Ultimare.

The best way to describe Kalgea would be to combine Felucia and Old Republic Kashyyyk, both from the Star Wars universe.  The central rainforests contain trees that can grow up to 1.3 miles tall and are overlooked by stunning mountain ranges.  The north-east portions of the planet contains mushroom forests with giant fungus that are both translucent and bioluminecent.

What is illustrated here is a spikecrest sersol, the smallest of the sersols, a species of lizard with folds of skin that allow them to glide in the trees.  Spikecrests can be found in the lower canopies and floors of the rainforests.

Also illustrated here is roughly what the Kalgean rainforest floors look like.  They are a dark place, no sunlight can reach them.  However, they are dimly lit by some of the indigenous plants.

I know I should be working on other things, but I’m just so excited to start working on Kalgea.  I’ll probably work on it in bits and pieces along side my other planets and characters.  I’ve already done a lot of the work on the planetary map for it… just need to fill in the names.  I hope to have that up by the weekend.

Of Science and Spirituality

The Azure Wheel Galaxy is divided 50/50 between the scientific side and the spiritual side. The two sides coexist peacefully, and neither could survive without the other.

In my Intrepid story, Liah represents the spiritual side of the galaxy while Shae represents the scientific. The two share an unbreakable bond of friendship, symbolizing the unity of the two sides of the universe.

Their relationship is “complicated” to say the least. Shae has deep romantic feelings for her, but Liah sees them as being kindred spirits rather then potential lovers. Both Liah and Shae are in relationships with other people.

The critter that Liah is holding is a glider sersol, a subspecies of small lizards with skin flap “wings” native to the rainforest planet, Kalea. Gliders do make good pets, but the one Liah is holding is a wild one. She’s allowed to have such interactions with wild beasts due to her Dr. Dolittle type powers.

Dread - First thoughts

First pass designs for Rahst’s spikecrest sersol, Dread.  “Sersol” is the broad term for a family of small lizards native to the rainforest planet, Kalgea.  Spikecrests are so named for the flaps of pointed skin on the back of their heads.  They live on the forest floor and lower canopies and use the flaps of skin on their back to glide from tree to tree like a flying squirrel.

Dread is Rahst’s pet sersol.  Rahst is a space-douche, but dread seems to be the only thing in the world that Rahst cares about besides himself.
