This is a perfect example of the pieces I’ve been doing for my portfolio. Since last year when showing my portfolio I’ve had several companies interested in me as a colorist, but wanted to see me color other people’s work, I’ve been coloring line art that other people have done. Most of the color pieces I’ve been working on will not be posted online, but this is an exception because it was a commission I bought from ShotgunValentine of my personal character Aredon.I’m considering opening up commissions to color people’s line art in the future since I have a lot of fun doing this.

Character Overview - Aredon

Second in my “Character Overview” series. This is a series of images and information about my individual characters for anyone who wants to draw them for any reason.

Up now is Aredon, the Imperial Suns fearless leader.  He is a big boy, towering at 7’ and over 340 pounds of muscle (Ultimarians tend to be heavier then humans of the same size due to their denser muscle fibers).  He may look intimidating, but in reality he is a gentle giant.

Although he is the leader of the Imperial Suns, the squadron of elite soldiers under the command of the Ultimarian Emperor, Himnare Zemothe, and a General, he considers himself to be a soldier first and foremost.  He would rather be taking orders on the battlefield then sitting behind a desk creating strategies, so he considers himself to be “General” in name alone.

His character sheet:

Click on the above image to see it full sized.

Please note his back tattoo if his back is going to be shown at all.  It is of a dragon coiled around a pair of stylized wings.

His clothing can vary.  He usually likes to dress in simpler clothing without bright or flashy colors or patterns.  Jeans and a t-shirt are what he usually wears when off duty.

Next up are his facial features.  He has a thick face and neck and is handsome in his own rugged way.  Things to note are his nose, eyes and hair.

Speaking of eyes…

Ultimarian eyes are really distinctive.  I did a little write up on them a while ago.  The full eye illustration on there is actually Aredon’s eye.

image

As for his body type.  I haven’t done a body study nice enough to post here, and it’s reaaally difficult for me to find someone with the exact same body type, so I’m just going to describe it then post the closest example that I can find.

Aredon’s physique is big and boxy.  He is very muscular, with nice definition in his upper body, but isn’t overly veiny and gross like many bodybuilders tend to be.  His pecs, arms and back are nicely defined and he does have a six pack.

This picture at Deposit Photos is the closest that I can find… though Aredon is slightly thicker all around, but especially in his chest and arms.

Other then that, information about his past and personality can be found at his page on the Azure Wheel Wiki.

This information will be updated as need be.

See… even in the future, duct tape holds the universe together. It’s the second time in the series Shae’s made a joke like that, so it’s a concept that he knows better then anyone.

LOL at Shae’s face in panel 1.There’s an extra page to the bar scene that will be included in the printed version. Also… there’ll be another opportunity for a cameo appearance later in the issue. More about that later.

I always had fun writing the scenes where Shae is being himself. Particularly because he knows exactly what to say to piss of Rahst.NewEnglander came up with the word “Shaeisms” to describe his shennanigans and jokes.

I wasn’t planning on having another page done so soon, but insomnia is a bitch. Juneri and Adaesha, two of Rahst’s cronies, make their first appearance here. They don’t have much of a role to play in this issue, but become important characters to the plot later on. Some characters pulled from my cameo journal are here. The characters in the background from left to right are: Vengeofthestars’s Eric FlameShuken’s Laila TwoOwls’s Maerin My Husband’s Azarus as a thank you for his help with writing the script. The Bartender is NewEnglander’s Maggie in her human form. If you put your character’s name in the journal and they didn’t get on this page, no worries. There’s still a few pages in this scene where I’ll potentially add more Cameos… and a scene near the end of their comic for those who don’t mind their characters being in a more risque situation. Journal sign ups will be open until I complete page 6. So still some time to sign up your character.

You’re a damn liar, Shae. You know EXACTLY what you want, you just don’t want to admit it!A lot of the time, I don’t have a lot to say about individual pages, but this one I do have quite a bit to say. This page (And the next few that follow) were among my favorite pages to write and the ones I was really looking forward to illustrating. Mostly because it was the guys just acting like guys. One of my beta readers described moments like these as “The guys high-five and say ‘YES! That’s how it is’… while the girls facepalm, sigh and say, ‘Yep. That’s how it is’.The Joke in the first panel was Azarus’ idea. I don’t consider it ‘breaking the 4th wall’ per se… more like taking a chisel and hammering out a few pieces of the fourth wall. It’s a slight nod to the guy who was the inspiration for Shae’s appearance. If you actually get the joke, you get a cookie and a hundred internetz. That being said. I’m REALLY looking forward to working on and posting the next few pages. They contain some of my favorite lines of the series.
