Sketches and thought processes for my in progress Sci-Fi graphic novel, Intrepid. Also, some random goofiness.
Following:
A rough sketch of Juneri. Lately, I’ve been having an urge to draw him playing the drums… as he is a musician. I’d like to finish this, but it’ll likely be a side project that I work on between other pictures. IF I even get around to finishing it.

Character Overview - Juneri
Another in my “Character Overview” series. This is a series of images and information about my individual characters for anyone who wants to draw them for any reason.
Juneri is a gunman for the Tao Guard, an elite unit of soldiers that serve directly under the Imperial Navy’s Supreme General.
He is a Reth’kaa (a rare mutation of his species that has direct ties to the spirit world and can control their own soul, resulting in some pretty neat powers), but a very weak empath Reth’kaa. Specific details about his abilities can be read here.

Something to note would be the ‘greek keys’ tattoo on his wrist as well as the tribal star on his shoulder. If his arms are showing, then these must be visible.
He has unique facial features that include high cheekbones and a pointed chin.
His eyes are his most striking feature. They are a brilliant gold color with teal border and highlights that give his eyes the look of a tarnished bronze. Here is his eyes as illustrated by Zyden, which is pretty dead on to how his eyes look.
And since the eyes of his species are unique in general, here’s a brief overview on Ultimarian eyes.
Juneri’s body type is very slender. He can’t seem to build muscle no matter how hard he tries. His arms, however are a bit more toned then the rest of his body.
This is the closest example to his body type that I could find…
Jun also has a deformity in his feet where his little toes overlap his forth toes. He can move them independently. If his feet are showing, then this is something that shouldn’t be forgotten.
Other things to note about Juneri is that I always associate him with the color gold, since I’ve always pictured his soul/aura to be golden in color.
He is also a musician. He plays the drums and is pretty good at it, so drawing him with a drum set would always be awesome. >_<

Juneri - Character Model Sheet by =Ulario
This character sheet is so long overdue. Jun is a minor character in my webcomic at the moment, but in later issues he does switch roles to become a major part of the stories.
This reference is somewhat temporary since I’ll probably have to make him a new one down the road as the story progresses. It’ll be a while before that happens, though.
Empath Reth’kaa / Juneri’s Powers
While working on Jun’s character sheet, it had me really thinking about what his powers entail.
Juneri would be classified as an ‘empath’. Empath Reth’kaas have a strong connection to the emotions and feelings to those around them. This is not a ‘psychic’ ability, but rather is more like the sixth sense of a shark. They can pick up on biological clues given by others, mostly pheremones to sense the deep emotions and feelings of others. If you watch the TV show, Fringe there was an episode in season 1 with a kid found in an abandoned building that could have been a dead-on empath reth’kaa.
They tend to make good listeners and deep thinkers. Many of them make great philosophers, artists and musicians.
While Jun may be an empath Reth’kaa, his abilities are very weak and barely worth mentioning. He can sense the basic emotions of some people to some extent but has no deep connection to them and cannot sense the deeper emotions.
He also has a slight aura around him that only stronger reth’kaa can sense. This aura can make them share his emotional state. When he’s depressed, it can make a stronger reth’kaa in the area feel depressed, etc.
Emperor Himnare has no ill will towards him, but doesn’t like being in Jun’s presence because of it.

Intrepid Issue 2 - Page 3 by =Ulario
I wasn’t planning on having another page done so soon, but insomnia is a bitch.
Juneri and Adaesha, two of Rahst’s cronies, make their first appearance here. They don’t have much of a role to play in this issue, but become important characters to the plot later on.

Intrepid - Cast of Characters by =Ulario
This was made for the inside back cover of the printed version of the Intrepid Comics, but I’m also posting if here as a guide to the online reader.
This is a brief rundown of the main characters in the Intrepid series. I may do another one for side characters and add to it as the comic goes on, but for now these are the main guys (and one gal).
Juneri and Cylor won’t make their first appearances until issue 2, but they contribute greatly to the story.
