I really had no intentions of posting this yet, since it is the center illustration to an upcoming species sheet. However, I have not made this species public yet and need a reference for this month’s Fantasy Xchange, so here we are.

A brief overview of their appearance (more details about them when I finish the character sheet).

Aurynns are biological oddities, since they share characteristics of reptiles, avians and mammals. Biologists aren’t sure what genome to categorize them in, so they have their own.

They are about 5’5”-5’8” tall on average and are very slender.

Colorization depends on the ancestry of the individual. Aurynns with ancestry from forest or jungle regions are green or greenish-blue while those with ancestry from arid or grassland regions are tan or brown. I’m also tinkering with silver colored Aurynn from mountain regions. No matter the region, their crests, throat, eyes and stripe markings are always orange,

Ulario's Character Creation Process - Part 4 (detailing)

“Details” can define any small aspects of the physical appearance of the character. At this stage, I work on any features that I feel are important to the character. In this case, Zach’s extensive tattooing.

I’m also showing his body type here, so I’m technically killing two birds with one stone. I’ve had some heavy tattooing in mind for Zach since I first dreamed up this character almost two years ago. This is his final tattoo design, although I haven’t decided if I’m going to make them standard tattoos or ta moko style, which means they will be slightly raised above his skin.

The actual design was inspired from about 6 different tribal tattoo designs that I pulled together into one.

And since I’m always hesitant to post my character’s tattoo designs publicly, because I’ve seen plenty of people steal tattoos designed for others… do not steal this design. Please. Not even for use on your own characters. This was meant to be an original design for Zach and it will lose that if other people steal.

Ulario’s Character Creation Process - Part 3 (Refined Sketches)

Now I’ve refined Zach’s appearance. As you can see when compared to the last sketches, I’ve made quite a few changes. I’m actually pretty happy with his face now, although there will still be some tweaking. I may change his facial hair and his jawline in profile, since both are very similar in appearance to Juneri.

There have also been a few other changes.

Personality - Zach is now younger and cockier then I previously imagined him to be. He likely was hired to the Imperial Suns no more than 2-3 years ago after someone else retired or quit the team. He hasn’t seen a lot of action.

Backstory - I’m trying to come up with a backstory on how someone like him became a sniper, since someone in that position is usually a seasoned veteran. I see him as originally being trained for a the Ultimarian equivalent of a SWAT team, but Aredon witnessed him do something so heroic that he really wanted him on the team.

Next up… I hope to work on his body type and extensive tattoo designs.

This is a perfect example of the pieces I’ve been doing for my portfolio. Since last year when showing my portfolio I’ve had several companies interested in me as a colorist, but wanted to see me color other people’s work, I’ve been coloring line art that other people have done.

Most of the color pieces I’ve been working on will not be posted online, but this is an exception because it was a commission I bought from ShotgunValentine of my personal character Aredon.

I’m considering opening up commissions to color people’s line art in the future since I have a lot of fun doing this.

All work and no play makes Traci a dull girl… or at least draw things like this…

I’ve been working really hard to get at least a decent chunk of my portfolio ready for next Saturday, when I’ll be showing it to a few people for potential employment. I needed a five minute break to eat lunch and do some doodling for fun and then this happened.

It’s the result of a conversation ~ESHanninen-M and I had about her character being a twinkie loving fiend that is having withdrawals because there haven’t been any twinkies since December. I know they’re coming back in July, but five months is a long time without if you’re addicted to them.

My Shae is a space-nerd with an atrocious diet full of chips, hamburgers and overly greasy and/or sugary snacks.

I know that Jez is usually a pacifist… but if Shae tried to steal his box of twinkies, it would be war!

For the record… I don’t like twinkies. >_<

I did some loose sketches on how I envision Zach’s face to look. I’ve also written some notes for myself. As you can tell, I’m not fully happy with a lot of it and a lot will change.

Now will come the long process of refining his facial features and general appearance to something that I think fits. I’ll try to keep posting updates along the way.

Ulario's Character Creation Process - Part 1 (Initial Thoughts)

I’ve been wanting to do this for a while. Basically a step by step guide of my process of creating characters. I will show all of the love that I put into creating my characters ever step of the way. This isn’t meant to be a tutorial per se, but maybe someone will learn something.

The character that I will be working on throughout this series will be a member of the Imperial Suns, the military group that my main storyline focuses on, so you can expect that it will take me a lot of time to flesh him out. Months. Maybe a year. Maybe more.

I’ve had the idea for this character in my head for almost a year and a half. I first came up with his concept when I was writing the overview storyline for my Intrepid series and I have been mulling over this character idea ever since. It is now time for me to start seriously fleshing him out.

While a lot of thoughts went through my head while I was creating him, I had to pick and chose my good ideas. Filtering them out through a mountain of horrible ideas that I’ve come up with.

Here’s a brief overview of the character that I have in mind. Keep in mind that this, like everything else in this series is not final. Things CAN and likely will change by the time I’m finished creating him.

Name - He was originally going to be named “Shayne”, but I decided that it sounded too much like “Shae” (another character on the team. Having names this similar would not be practical… let alone confusing when called out on the battlefield. I then went through other names… like Zane, Thaine and Len. In the end, I decided on Zach. However, it will not be short for “Zachary”. It will be short for something more original. I haven’t decided for sure on his full name, but as of right now, Zachenth, Zachale and Kalzach are the front runners.
Appearance - This has also went through a few changes. I originally pictured him with softer features, medium-brown hair and green eyes. Over time, I thought he’d end up looking too similar to Juneri, and to me that didn’t fit well. Right now, I’m more seeing him with black hair, grey eyes and a more manly face. Body type is up in the air, but as of right now, I picture him as a well muscled character, though not nearly as much as Aredon.
Tattoos - This is one thing that I have had in mind for this character since day one. He will have extensive tribal tattooing on his torso. I’ve always pictured a series of tribals running up one side of his body from waist to shoulder… but I’m also playing around with the idea of his tattoos instead being on his chest, upper arms and back. I also had a thought of his tattoos being done ta moko style with a chisel so they’d be slightly raised above his skin, but this is just a passing thought.
Occupation - Sniper. This is pretty much definite. The Suns have several rifleman, but not a single one could be classified as a sniper.
Personality - This is up in the air and will likely change… but as for now I see him has being assertive and enhusiastic yet resourceful, graceful, humble and disciplined.
Backstory - Nothing definite, yet other then the fact that both parents are still alive and he, like Shae, was drafted into the war. However, unlike Shae, he probably went willingly.

More on Zach coming in the next few minutes. I’ve already got a first pass sketch of him completed, so stay tuned for part 2.

I’ve been wanting to do a character sheet for some time, if only because I wanted to try to convert my previous template to my all digital style.

I decided to go with Keidos for this character sheet because I rarely get to play with my characters that are members of ‘unevolved species’ (the word that the Galactic Alliance uses for species that not yet discovered hyperspace travel). The Alliance has strict laws against interacting with these species, so I can’t really use them in my main stories. Although such laws are for law-abiding citizens of the Alliance, which mean little to pirates and criminals. It may be in interesting ‘social experiment’ to one day write a short story about a member of an unevolved race that was captured by criminals and sold on the black market. Will keep in mind for later.

Several people across the sites I post this comic to have made the comment on the last page that someone was going to get shot. Yep, they were right. Although the Angel does not die from this encounter.

I’m going to spend a week or two finishing the print edition and then issue 4 will start up.

Character Overview - Liah

My character overview series are because all of my great references pictures and important character information gets lost underneath all the posts that I do, and I’d like to have references easy to find for people who are doing trades, commissions, or gift arts of my characters.

I figured that I should give some of my female characters some attention, because its usually my boys that take center stage. Liah is the main female of the Intrepid series.

She is a reth’kaa, meaning that she has a rare ability ability among her species that directly connects her soul to the Lifestream, causing an increased sense of empathy towards others. Her personal abilities allow her strong empathy towards animal life. She can communicate with animals without saying a word and is slightly shamanistic. The best way to describer her would be a futuristic female version of Dar from the Beastmaster.

She is a member of the Blackmane order, a small group of intergalactic beastmasters but was hired onto the Imperial Suns because of her abilities.

Appearance-wise, she is a very beautiful woman with cute features, but she seems to be unaware of her own beauty. Either that or she simply doesn’t care. She does not dress or act overly sexy and should not be shamelessly sexualized. Liah’s charm lies in her inner beauty, strength and kind personality.

Character Sheet. This is a few years old and my style has changed a bit since then, but her appearance stays the same for the most part. I hope to make a better one sometime.

Her defining facial features. These are important to avoid ‘same-face syndrome’ among my characters.

Here’s some notes on Ultimarian eyes, since they’re pretty distinctive.

As for body type, Liah has a slender build and is very lightly muscled. Her breasts are a B-cup and she does have generous hips.

This is the best example that I can find of her body type.

As Liah is a beastmaster, she is usually accompanied by at least one animal. Some of her companions include:
Gabriel the Ariasha (white cat creature in her character sheet)
Nimbus the Cobyth
Khepri the Thokhil

Another thing to note is that she has a deep spiritual connection to Shae, although the two are friends, not lovers (even though it’s painfully obvious that Shae wants to be more then friends).

Today’s inspiration music, since I’d like to work on some Sin City fanarts for my portfolio.

This is long overdue, since this movie is on my top three list of favorite movies (maybe even my #1 favorite). Seriously.

I’ll actually watch the DVD menu for ten minutes before watching the movie. I get goosebumps just watching that.

And yes… I am super hyped for the sequel coming out later this year.

Updates + Creature thing

Today I’m going to get back on working on art that I owe people. I’ll still be working on my portfolio as well, but some people have been waiting long enough for their art from me.

Today will be spent trying to finish BadJoe’s commission… which combines steampunk and Skyrim, so it should be loads of fun. Per usual, only my world building stuff goes here so it will be popping up on DeviantArt and FurAffinity later on.

I’m hoping to do the last page of Issue 3 done today. Although it’s taking a backburner for art that I’m actually getting paid to do so no promises.

In the meantime, have a two minute warmup doodle from this morning.

I had a dream about this species last night. I can’t tell you much about them except for the fact that they were nectarvores and had lots and lots of hair. I might have to play with this design a little when I have the chance.

Not to thrilled about the body type, so there will definitely be lots of changes to them.

Shae’s tattoo…

Which I’m actually hoping to get as a real tattoo in the near future. Like on Shae, it will be located on my left shoulder and will only be about an inch or so big. I always wanted to get one of my boy’s tattoos on myself, but most were either too large or located in a place that would be hard to hide.

I hesitated to post this online, since I have seen people steal tattoo designs intended for other people… so I will just leave the warning that if you steal other people’s tattoo designs, then you are the biggest asshole in the world.
