I just wrote down a list of Jincilla deities from my old notes in my sketchbooks and oh friggidy-frak I didn’t remember that there were this many Gods in their pantheon. I was thinking of doing a series of illustrations of the different Gods. That may have to wait. I’ll still probably do it, but it will end up taking longer then I thought. There is a big mythology going with these Gods, but I’ll also come back to that later. For now I’m just trying to concentrate of getting references of all my species out there.
List of the 26 gods with brief descriptions under the cut.
The Jincilla are a race from my fictional universe. They may look like avians, but they infact evolved from dromaeosaurs (Since there seemed to be confusion the last time I posted anything about these guys… I will once again state that they EVOLVED from them, meaning they don’t have the exact appearance of their dinosaur ancestors, but there is raptor lineage way down the line. Jincilla have avian-like faces complete with beak).
The Jincilla are labeled an ‘undeveloped’ race, meaning that they have not yet gained knowledge of space travel and are generally left alone by the spacefaring races. Their technology and culture is closest to our ancient Rome, but with a slight Indian flare that is seen mostly in the clothes, dance and music.
Shown here is a Jincilla Oracle. Oracles are always female (female Jincilla are bewbless). The Jincilla belief system has a complex pantheon of Gods lead by Xeul, the god of the wind. The Gods ‘speak’ through the visions of the Oracle, a beautiful young female who can receive spiritual visions. I’d like to say that a Jincilla oracle is similar to the oracle from the movie 300, but really, they’re not. Oracles are a highly respected member of society and Jincilla beliefs. There’s still much dancing and skimpy clothing, though.
Music and dancing are a big part of Jincilla culture.
The Spiritual center of the Jincilla is the Temple of the Winds, a giant temple dedicated to the entire Pantheon. Sometime I’ll have to do illustrations of the main deities of the Jincilla Pantheon.
Tools Used: Mechanical Pencil, Paper, Scanner, Photoshop, Paint Tool Sai Time Taken: Unrecorded… I worked on this on and off the last few days Soundtrack: "Traditional Indian Music" - Rag Pahadi (This is the closest thing I could find to what I imagine Jincilla music sounds like)
Any tips in naming the species? You've got some interesting species there, and though some of the name origins are quite obvious (like felarian or ultramarian), he others are unusual. I always had some trouble with names and titles, actually :| and now I'm in a need of a species titles, and can't think of a single thing.
Hmmmm…. well that’s an interesting thing to ask. Most of my character or species names just come to me either while I’m dreaming or daydreaming.
The best advice that I can give is to do a little research into foreign languages. In particular, some of the older languages or ones with unique tones for ideas. For example, most of the names for places on my rainforest planet, Kalgea were inspired by syllables from Nahuatl, the native languages used by the Aztecs. Even a fusion of two different earth languages can sound really cool and unique - the names for my planet Assari are a direct fusion of Chinese and Japanese syllables.
Other interesting languages to research could be Latin, Māori, Ancient Greek, Swahili, Inuit, Aariya, Quechua or anything of the like. I find the MesoAmerican languages to be the most inspiring because I love me some MesoAmerican culture! I try to stay away from most of the European languages because most of them just aren’t unique sounding enough, but others may find inspiration there where I usually don’t. Seriously, just look at the world around you and you’re bound to find some inspiration somewhere. :)
I hope this helps. I’m really bad at explaining myself… and even worse at explaining my way of thinking.
Also… it’s ‘Ultimarian’. There’s no ’ first R’ in the name. >_> It’s the common name that they call themselves and as an extension, what other species call them. The technical name given to the species by the Spaceborn is “Ath’an Kinethu”, but let’s face it, “Ultimarian” is easier to say. The Ultimarian language/Galactic Common is pretty plain sounding but it’s so much easier to learn and pronounce then the other languages.
Felarian, same thing. It’s their name in Galactic Common. For millenia, they were universally hated by the Alliance so they didn’t really have a choice in what the Alliance called them. After they finally did join the alliance the name stuck.
It’s been a while since I’ve released more text snippets about my galaxy (I’m not using the word “headworld”. Ever. I really hate that word). I’m going to take a break from art that I should be doing and write up a little one.
The native Ultimarian language, also known as ‘Galactic Common’ is an ancient language dating back to before the Ultimarians gained knowledge of space travel. When they were at the stage of evolution that we humans are at now there were multiple languages being spoken among them. This language was one of the most widely used among the species and was adopted as their official trade language. Think of it as being their version of our English language.
As they evolved, this language drowned out all the others used on the planet. All other Ultimarian languages are nor regarded as being ‘dead languages’.
Upon the founding of the Galactic Alliance, this Ultimarian language was chosen to become the official trade language of the alliance as Ultimarians were the most numerous out of the five elder races and their language was the easiest for non native speakers to learn and pronounce.
Because of the long standing status of this language as the Alliance’s trade language, most non-Ultimarians are fluent in it as well as their own native language though most of them speak their native language whenever possible. Most Ultimarians don’t bother learning other languages simply because they don’t feel the need to.
While they may not be completely fluent in other language, most Ultimarians do pick up smatterings of other languages just by interacting with other races. Usually picking up curse words the quickest. The words in other languages that an Ultimarian knows will often make it into their regular vocabulary. They are most commonly used as an expression of disbelief or anger (this will make more sense when issue 1 of Intrepid is out).
Ultimarian names tend to be a hodgepodge of different names and words from ‘dead’ Ultimarian languages. Ultimarian names tend to be slightly soft sounding and vowel-heavy. Names beginning with vowels are very common as well as names ending with “I” (Itumi, Nazari, Juneri, etc). These names are usually words taken from “Tridian”, which was a widely used Ultimarian language before the ages of technological advances.
Many Ultimarian names are taken from other alien languages. This method of naming is becomming increasingly popular among Ultimarian parents.
Very rarely are Ultimarians named from words in Galactic Common.
Some of the meanings behind some of my character’s names:
Aredon - "Bright Star" in the Tia’tia’s native language
Markus (Shae’s real name) - “Revered Warrior” in Risterian, A ‘dead’ Ultimarian language
“Yes, commish Shae! *feels like becoming a Shae-fan* 8|”—
You wouldn’t be the only one. Pretty much every beta reader for my upcoming webcomic has expressed their Shae love. I had no clue he’d be so likeable when I created him. >_< Though as much as I love Shae, Aredon will always be my #1 bébé in the comic.
I would like to commish that guy to draw Shae… but it won’t be a little while. I still have some of the hubby’s immigration fees to pay so the money is needed elsewhere for now.
"From my heart and from my hands. Why don’t people understand my intentions?"
This is a Motor City Comic Con portfolio piece but it was originally meant to be an entry in a contest which is why he’s drawn all sexy-like. I don’t have time to finish the rest of the art required for said contest so I’ve pretty much dropped the idea entirely.
Instead of a ‘mainstream’ character I decided to do a picture of one of my own boys (Since I’m planning on commissioning a pro comic artist to draw a sketch of him while I’m there). I tried a different coloring style.
Shae is my resident space nerd/scienctist/uber geek character. He’s one of my favorite characters to draw because he’s just so fun. He’s also a total attention whore.
I’ve pretty much adopted the song ‘Weird Science’ as his theme song since it completely fits the character… but instead of trying to create a woman like the movie/song is about he likes to make explosives.
Azure Wheel progression is going to be moving very slowly for the next month and a half because my Comic Con portfolio has taken center stage in terms of things that I need to work on. I’ll still be working on it here and there and my Free Comic Book Day comic will still be out on time!
Felarians are one of the oldest races that I’ve created. They must have been with me for the better half of a decade now. Their design and personality haven’t really changed since I first created them. I don’t know if I’d create a race like this nowadays, but I keep them the way that they are.
Things have been crazy lately and I’ve put Azure Wheel stuff on the backburner for now because I need to get a portfolio ready for the Motor City Comic Con… which is in a little over a month from now. I also have a pile of commissions to work on on top of that. I’m still working on the Azure Wheel, but things have crawled to a snail’s pace.
I’ll try to have the Felarian’s species sheet done tonight or tomorrow. I’m done with the art for it. I just need to add text.
In the meantime… website design! This will be the main webpage for the Intrepid Comic. This is just for the eyes of my tumblr followers because it actually contains a link to my super secret project that I’ve been working on last Summer… as well as the entire first page of my Free Comic Book Day Comic. So yah… on this page somewhere is a single word that completely gives away what that project is. :)
Click on the image below for the larger, readable version.
Just a quick heads up that commissions are going to be a little slower to complete then usual since I’m in the process of putting together a portfolio to bring to Motor City Comic Con near the end of May. I’ll get commissions done and my queue will remain open, so no worries to anyone I owe art too. It may just take a little longer for me to get things done. :)
Azure Wheel progress will be slowed to a snail’s pace until the portfolio is a way’s along. I’ll still work on aliens and what not for my fictional galaxy, but it’s now it’s the low man on my priority totem pole.
That being said, expect a wave of rare fan-arty pictures of mainstream characters from me on my dA and FA pages. I need to show my abilities to draw some of these characters to some of the people in the industry. :)
Space art to help me relax. I did this while winding down and rewatching Suburban Knights.
Tsao-Koza (literally meaning “archangel” in the native Zhaocian language) is the great white gas giant of the Saa system. Its surrounding rings are a gold color thanks to the high amounts of gold ore in the rocks that make up the rings.
Needless to say that mining is pretty heavy in this area, but it is regulated by the Zhaocian government. This area is also full of police to crack down on any illegal mining operations and to keep would-be pirates at bay.
So this weekend I’ve been running around like a maniac trying to get things situated. I have so much on my plate right now.
Things to do:
Finish the last page of my free comic book day comic.
Work on website for the Intrepid Comic.
Make changes on a sketch commission of a two-headed bear creature.
Start doing roughs on several other commissions.
Start thinking about this month’s Fantasy Xchange.
Put in a large print order with my printer. Then mail it out.
Get hubby’s paperwork and what not situated for his interview with the Montreal Consulate on the 24th of this month.
Put together a portfolio to take with me to Motor City Comic Con.
Tonight I’m probably just going to chill out and do some space art. I’ve been hankering to illustrate Tsao-Kosa the white gas giant in my Saa system.
In the meantime… have a star map. This isn’t one of my systems, it was a commission. I never thought that there would be any interest in people wanting commissions for these, but several people have contacted me about them.
